Khadi has long been associated with the freedom movement and the strong will of a nation to set itself free from colonial domination. The making of khadi is in favour of our beloved Mother Earth since it does not rely on electric units and the manufacturing processes do not generate any toxic waste products. The usage of Khadi reduced post independence.
To make Khadi, raw materials like cotton or silk are spun into threads on spinning wheels called charkhas. This spun yarn is then wound into reels and sent to weaver families, who in-turn weave this yarn into a fabric. The weaving of the yarn results in the creation of air pockets, which help one stay warm in winter and cool in summer. Khadi is a versatile and light fabric which makes it comfortable to wear and carry. It also lasts long and is used to make a large variety of items, one of which is obviously the saree.
The safest way to wash your get the dress clean is dry cleaning. But you can still hand wash it with cold water and gentle soap.
Important advice: Always use cold water to hand-wash your sensitive Khadi garments and rinse them gently.
Hot water is a big no-no! It could cause shrinkage and may also cause the fabric to roughen and damage the delicate embroidery.
